ἄρακις
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἀράκη (arákē), ἀράκτης (aráktēs)
Etymology
The form ἀράκτης (aráktēs) proves Pre-Greek origin, in view of the group -κτ-. Furnée further compares ἄροκλον (ároklon, “bowl, pan”) with κτ>κλ, for which he gives parallels. The interchange α/ο is well known in substrate words.
