Etymology

Traditionally derived from ἐπῐπᾰκτόω (epĭpăktóō, to shut close) +‎ -ῐ́ς (-ĭ́s), because of its healing function. However, Beekes compares also the plant name πεκτή (pektḗ, comfrey).
