Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *weḱ- (“to choose, want”). Akin to Old Armenian վասն (vasn, “for the sake of”), Sanskrit वश्ति (vaśti, “he wills”) and Old Persian 𐎺𐏁𐎴𐎠 (vašnā, “thanks to”).
