Etymology 1

From ἕλιξ (hélix, anything twisted, winding or spiral). The constellation is so called from its revolving round the north celestial pole.

Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀁𐀪𐀏 (e-ri-ka). Traditionally said to be from etymology 1, but more likely from the same source as Latin salix, Proto-Celtic *salixs (Old Irish sail, Welsh helyg) and Proto-Germanic *salhô (Old English sealh, Old Norse selja).
