Hypothetically compared with Old Armenian ազգ (azg, “people, tribe”) and Persian (âzġ, “a thing lopped (as vine-prunings); slip, cutting, scion”), but this word is further isolated. The variation of the initial vowel rather shows that the word is Pre-Greek.
