ὠσχός

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • ὄσχος (óskhos)

Etymology

Hypothetically compared with Old Armenian ազգ (azg, people, tribe) and Persian آزغ (âzġ, a thing lopped (as vine-prunings); slip, cutting, scion), but this word is further isolated. The variation of the initial vowel rather shows that the word is Pre-Greek.
