The etymology is unknown. Could be derived from Ancient Greek Μῆδος (Mêdos, Mede) or its Coptic variant ⲁⲙⲁⲇⲁ (amada) in Gen. 10:2. Compare ⲁⲙⲙⲓⲧⲉⲛ (ammiten, Amida, a town in Eastern Anatolia, modern Diyarbakır) and ⲁⲙⲙⲓⲧⲟⲛ (ammiton, Nicomedia).
