(mrsw, “new wine”). Ultimately borrowed from a Northwest Semitic language. Compare Ugaritic 𐎎𐎗𐎘 (mrṯ, “must”), Jewish Literary Aramaic מְרִית (mərīṯ, “sweet wine”), and Classical Syriac ܡܶܪܺܝܬ݂ܳܐ (merīṯā, “new wine, must”). Also related to Jewish Literary Aramaic מֵירַת (mēraṯ, “must, juice”), Phoenician 𐤌𐤓𐤔 (mrš, “must”), and Biblical Hebrew תִּירוֹשׁ (tīrōš, “sweet wine, must”).
