From Proto-Berber, feminine of a word for “man, husband” from Proto-Afroasiatic, cognate with Proto-Semitic *mut- and Hausa mùtûm. Cognate with Kabyle tameṭṭut, Tarifit tameṭṭut and Tuareg tamăḍt.
