Etymology

From (はな) (hana, nose) + ()まり (tsumari, obstruction, clogging, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()まる (tsumaru, to be blocked)). The tsu changes to zu as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
