Etymology

From 鼻(はな) (hana, “nose”) + 詰(つ)まり (tsumari, “obstruction, clogging”, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 詰(つ)まる (tsumaru, “to be blocked”)). The tsu changes to zu as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
