Etymology

Borrowed from English zed. The English word-final voiced sound /d/ is sometimes transcribed as if it was voiceless, as tto, instead of the usual (and more accurate) ddo, because Japanese didn’t have a voiced geminate. Perhaps also influenced by Dutch [zɛt], which ends in a voiceless sound. Some English words ending in the voiced sound /z/ are also transcribed as if they ended in the voiceless sound /s/ (e.g.: ニュース (nyūsu, “news”). Doublet of ゼータ (zēta, “zeta”).
