Etymology

From Shiji, Vol. XL (史記·孔子世家):

至於春秋》,,子夏贊一辭 [Traditional Chinese poetry, trad.]
至于春秋》,,子夏赞一辞 [Traditional Chinese poetry, simp.]
From: The Records of the Grand Historian, by Sima Qian, c. 91 BCE
Zhìyú wéi “Chūnqiū”, bǐ zé bǐ, xuē zé xuē, Zǐxià zhī tú néng zàn yī cí. [Pinyin]
In editing the Spring and Autumn Annals Confucius recorded certain events and omitted others, [the result being so perfect] that not even men like Zixia [who excelled in literature] could make any revision.

Later on its meaning had gradually changed to the modern sense, no comment.
