Compound of 出世(しゅっせ) (shusse, “advancement, development, success in one's life”) + 魚(うお) (uo, “fish”).[1][2][3]

First cited in the 1949 novel 父　その死 (Chichi - Sono Shi, “Father: His Death”), by Aya Kōda.[1]
