Regular shift from Classical Japanese ク活用(かつよう) (ku-katsuyō) adjective 可(べ)し (beshi) to modern -i adjective.

可(べ)い • (bei) -i (adverbial 可(べ)く (beku))

As an adjective, it can be considered to only be used in place of Standard Japanese 終(しゅう)止(し)形(けい) (shūshikei, “terminal form”) べし (beshi) and 連(れん)体(たい)形(けい) (rentaikei, “attributive form”) べき (beki), as all other inflected forms are identical.
