Etymology
吉祥 (kichijō, “auspicious sign, good omen”) + 寺 (-ji, “Buddhist temple”). Named after Kichijō-ji Temple which was located in Bunkyō City, Tokyo, before being destroyed by fire in the year 1657. This temple was in turn named after Hindu and Buddhist goddess 吉祥天 (Kichijōten).
