Etymology
Unknown. Attested from at least the sixteenth century.[1] Compare 蕪 (kabu, “turnip”) or 鏑 (kabura, “turnip-shaped whistle”).[2] Kokugo Dai Jiten notes a suggestion from Nippo Jisho (1603) that me refers to seaweed,[1] but compare also 芽 (me, “sprout; bud”). See also 和布 (wakame).
