Etymology
Coined by Fukuzawa Yukichi in 1869 in his Sekai Kunizukushi,[1] from a compound of 大 (tai, “big, large”) + 洋 (yō, “ocean”) + 州 (shū, “continent”). 州 is a daiyōji replacing 洲.
