山礬

Chinese

mountain; hill alum
trad. (山礬)
simp. (山矾)

Etymology

From its mountainous habitat, and its use as direct dye, without needing a mordant such as alum.[1]

According to the Song Dynasty poem 山礬花二首 by Huang Tingjian:

野人鄭花山礬。」 [MSC, trad.]
野人郑花山矾。」 [MSC, simp.]
Yěrén cǎi zhènghuā yǐ rǎn huáng, bù jiè fán ér chéng sè, gù míng shānfán.” [Pinyin]
The wild people picked 'zhèng flowers' to dye items yellow, without using alum to make the dye, so it was named 'mountain alum'.
