Likely a shift from either 眩(まばゆ)し (mabayushi), the classical form of 眩(まばゆ)い (mabayui, “dazzling”), or from まぼそい (mabosoi, a dialectal word meaning bright or dazzling) itself a compound of ま (ma-, connective form of 目(め) (me, “eye”)) + ぼそい (-bosoi, rendaku form of 細(ほそ)い (hosoi, “thin”)), in reference to how the eyes narrow when looking at something bright.^[1]
