Etymology
Derived from Ainu ソラㇷ゚チペッ (so rap ci pet), in turn a compound of Ainu so (“waterfall”) + v. rap (“to descend”, plural form of ran) + ci (plural nominalizing marker) + pet (“river”).[1] The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字).
