Etymology
茂 (shimi, “growing thickly”, an element also found in 茂に (shimini)[1]) + さぶ (-sabu, “to act like, to become like (the noun suffixed)[1][2]”, a suffix which forms upper bigrade conjugation verbs from nouns,[1][2] superseded by さびる (-sabiru))
