Etymology

From () (mi-, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, conjunctive form) of verb () (miru, to see)) + (-su, an honorific auxilliary).[1] According to Frellesvig, the mi- shifts to me- due to fusion with a medial -a- element.[2]
