Usage notes

In the Simplified Chinese standard 通用规范汉字表, 鎚 is treated as a variant form of 錘／锤 (chuí) and theoretically should be replaced by 锤. However, the two forms were not used interchangeably in ancient Chinese as they are in modern Chinese. Therefore, the first sense of this word is usually not simplified as 铁锤.
