Etymology
Appears to be a compound of 馬 (ba, “horse”) + 素 (su, “raw material”).[1][2]
The su element also appears in some references[1][3] as 馬尾 (su, “horsehair, specifically from the tail”), apparently deriving from 簀, 簾 (su, “latticework, matting, or netting in a strainer”), as horsehair was often used to make this.
