Compound of 鳴門 (naruto, “a noisy strait or narrows where the rushing of the tides causes noisy whirlpools”) +‎ 巻き (maki, “winding; spiral”), for the way the spiral pattern in the kamaboko resembles a whirlpool.^[1]^[2]
