MODIFIER LETTER LOW INVERTED EXCLAMATION MARK

[U+A720]

Not to be confused with .

Translingual

Symbol

  1. (Africanist notation) upstep; equivalent to IPA .
  2. (IPA, rare, superscript only) superscript extIPA ¡ for a weak, fleeting or epenthetic sublaminal percussive.

Usage notes

The low may be used for greater visual distinction from the IPA stress mark ˈ, or when superscript i is used for diphthongs (e.g. aⁱ, oⁱ). These can be especially confused in a sans-serif font. However, in some fonts low is only slightly lower than raised , rather than subscript, and so may be less distinct from those other characters.
