From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kʰɛːkᴰ (“guest”), from Middle Chinese 客 (MC khaek, “guest”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩯ᩠ᨠ, Lao ແຂກ (khǣk), Lü ᦶᦃᧅᧈ (ẋaek¹), Shan ၶႅၵ်ႇ (khèk), Thai แขก (kɛ̀ɛk), Tai Nüa ᥑᥦᥐᥱ (xǎek), Phake ၵိက် (khik), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜀𑜫 (khik), Zhuang hek.
