Etymology

First attested as Middle Korean 그릏 (kùlùh) in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1:45a[1], 1459.

Beyond Middle Korean, speculatively connected to Goguryeo 斤乙 (*kur) from the place name gloss of 沙非斤乙 to 赤木縣 (red tree district) found in the Samguk sagi.
