First attested in the Myobeomnyeonhwagyeong eonhae (妙法蓮華經諺解 / 묘법연화경언해), 1463, as Middle Korean 깆〮 (Yale: kíc).

The modern Standard Seoul form is a result of hypercorrection by Seoul speakers to avoid the /ki/ > /t͡ɕi/ palatalization in southern dialects. The hypercorrected form is first attested in the 19th century as Early Modern Korean 깃 (kis).
