냄비

Korean

Etymology

First attested as Early Modern Korean 남비 (nampi) in the Maeilsinmun (매일신문), 2 June, 1898, borrowed from Japanese (なべ) (nabe, pot).

This form reflects a shift in pronunciation due to umlaut (regressive assimilation by the second vowel (i)). Compare now-proscribed 남비 (nambi).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [nɛmbi] ~ [ne̞mbi]
