Etymology

First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 보곰자리, from *보곰 (*pwokwom) +‎ 자리 (cali, “spot, place”). However, the meaning of *보곰 (*pwokwom) is unclear.
