브ᅀᅥᆸ

Middle Korean

Etymology

Possibly a compound of 블〮 (púl, fire) +‎ (sèp, side).[1] The mutation of medial consonants is explained by a lenition of s > z following l and then a subsequent dropping of l before an alveolar; compare 프〮ᅀᅥ〮리 (phúzélì, land overgrown with weeds), from 플〮 (phúl) +‎ 서〮리 (sélì). The tonal discrepancy (low-low instead of the individual elements' high-low) also seems semi-regular; compare for instance 귀밑 (kwùymìth, root of the ear) from 귀〮 (kwúy, ear) +‎ (mìth, underneath).

Alternatively, perhaps from some **브ᇫ (**puz) +‎ -업 (-ep), wherein the root is speculatively linked to Proto-Tungusic *pusku; compare Manchu ᡶᡠᠰᡥᡠ (fushu), Ulch пуску, Nanai пуксу (puksu).[2]
