브ᅀᅥᆸ
Middle Korean
Etymology
Possibly a compound of 블〮 (púl, “fire”) + 섭 (sèp, “side”).[1] The mutation of medial consonants is explained by a lenition of s > z following l and then a subsequent dropping of l before an alveolar; compare 프〮ᅀᅥ〮리 (phúzélì, “land overgrown with weeds”), from 플〮 (phúl) + 서〮리 (sélì). The tonal discrepancy (low-low instead of the individual elements' high-low) also seems semi-regular; compare for instance 귀밑 (kwùymìth, “root of the ear”) from 귀〮 (kwúy, “ear”) + 밑 (mìth, “underneath”).
Alternatively, perhaps from some **브ᇫ (**puz) + -업 (-ep), wherein the root is speculatively linked to Proto-Tungusic *pusku; compare Manchu ᡶᡠᠰᡥᡠ (fushu), Ulch пуску, Nanai пуксу (puksu).[2]
