Etymology
Borrowed from Japanese シャープペンシル (shāpu penshiru), from English via wasei eigo (和製英語; pseudo-anglicism) derived from sharp + pencil, the former is a genericized trademark of Sharp from the Sharp Corporation, which was one of the earliest manufacturers of mechanical pencils from Japan.
