Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *biti- (to write), itself generally thought to be from Middle Chinese (MC pit, “writing brush”). Cognate with Old Uyghur 𐽼𐽶𐾀𐽶𐽹𐽰𐽷 (pytymʾk /⁠biti-⁠/, to write), Karakhanid [script needed] (biti-, to write), Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (biti-, to be destined), Northern Altai битиерге (bitiyerge, to write).
