Etymology

Two possibilities:

  1. Clauson (1962) suggests that it was derived from Sogdian 𐼊 (y, β€œyodh”) ultimately from Classical Syriac ܝ (β€œyodh”).
  2. Clauson (1970) suggests that it was derived from Ancient Greek Ξ™ (I, β€œiota”) through intermediaries.
