Within the Malaita languages, cognate to Kwara'ae afaafa niu (“large red parrot”) (with niu likely meaning coconut) and 'Are'are 'apa'apa (“a large green and red parrot”) (in Geerts). Externally, appears related to Ternate ubo, Loloda uboro, also both referring to the female eclectus.
