Contracted from earlier -мекші (-mekşı), from Proto-Turkic *-mekči. A cognate with Kyrgyz -мек (-mek), Southern Altai -мекчи (-mekči), Uzbek -moqchi, Turkmen -mekçi.

- Used to form definite future tense.
- Used to form definite future participles from verbs.
- келу (kelu, “to come”) + -мек (-mek) → келмек (kelmek, “which intends to come”)

This suffix rarely occurs in the spoken Kazakh, and is mostly restricted to written texts.
