-आई

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Old Hindi -आई (-āī), extracted from a few Prakrit nominal suffixes such as -आइअ n (-āia), -अइअ n (-aïa), -अविअ n (-avia), -आइआ f (-āiā), -अइआ f (-aïā). Compare Hindi जंभाई f (jambhāī, a yawn) / जंभना (jambhnā, to yawn) with Prakrit जंभाइअ n (jaṃbhāia, a yawn, yawning) / जंभ- (jaṃbha-, to yawn). The Prakrit suffixes are from Sanskrit -ता (-tā), -अयित (-ayita), -आपित (-āpita), -आयित (-āyita), etc extended with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-).
