From Proto-Athabaskan *tł’it’ (“liquid or granular matter moves or splashes; to fart”).
Cognate root found in Ahtna naghitlʼiitʼ (“(water, sand) fell down”), ztlʼiitʼ (“it farted”).
Also occur in Navajo with the meaning “to limber up, to rest up”, of uncertain derivation.
