First attested as Abbekinderen in 1571. Compound of Middle Dutch Abbe (a personal name) and the plural form of kind (child). The toponym refers to an undivided property inherited by the children of an otherwise unknown individual Abbe. Compare 's-Heer Hendrikskinderen and Waanskinderen.
