From Latin accipitres, plural of accipiter (“hawk”).

1. (obsolete, zoology) An obsolete order that includes rapacious birds, and now forms part of the Accipitriformes. They have a hooked bill, and sharp, strongly curved talons. There are three families, represented by the vultures, the falcons or hawks, and the owls.
