Borrowed from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓ρᾰχνώδης (ărăkhnṓdēs, “spidery”). Further from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓ρᾰ́χνης (ărắkhnēs, “spider”).

Coined by English entomologist and archaeologist John Obadiah Westwood in 1847.
