From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qaʀta (“outsiders, alien people”) via the Southern Luzon axis, possibly via Kapampangan. Compare Tuwali Ifugao Alta, Kapampangan Eta, Remontado Agta ata, Bikol Central agta, Cebuano agta, Maranao agta' / Aita, and Tausug agta'. Doublet of Agta.
