Etymology

First attested as babilonia in 1131. Compound of the toponym Babylon and broek (“marsh, marshland”). The settlement began as a land-reclamation venture by the Sint Truiden monastery. The village was named after Babylon either because of its remote location or (according to local legend) because of the surliness of its inhabitants.
