- (zoology) Any of the North African population, now extinct in the wild, of the lion subspecies Panthera leo leo.
2015, Bryn Ellis, Half Trace, page 290:Barbary lions had been believed extinct in the wild since the mid-twentieth century, survived only by a few odds and bods of DNA carried in captive individuals descended from Haile Selassie's private collection.
