Bargaila

Lithuanian

Etymology

(Baltic origin:) Composed of the two stems bárti (to fight) +‎ gailas (strong, powerful). The name is widely considered to have been adapted into Old Ruthenian as Баргаль / Баргель / Баргайла (Barhalʹ). This suggests an ancient origin that predates its documented appearance in East Slavic languages.

(Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars claimed that the name Bargaila and its Slavic cognates are counterparts of Old High German Bargeil. This perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.
