From Ancient Greek κεῦθος (keûthos, “innermost; depth; hiding”) + -philus (“loving”, from Ancient Greek φῐ́λος (phĭ́los)). Coined by American entomologist and paleontologist Samuel Hubbard Scudder in 1862.
