Named after the former nearby settlement of Chadwell (Street), inherited from Middle English Chaldwelle, from Old English *Ċeald(an)wielle, from ċeald (“cold”) + wielle (“well”).
A spurious connection to the name of St. Chad was popular in the 19th century.
