From crypto- (hidden; concealed, from Ancient Greek κρῠπτός (krŭptós)) +‎ Ancient Greek ἀσπασμός (aspasmós, greeting; embrace).

Coined by British politician, entomologist and cricketer Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham, in 1900.
