From crypto- (“hidden; concealed”, from Ancient Greek κρῠπτός (krŭptós)) + Ancient Greek ἀσπασμός (aspasmós, “greeting; embrace”).
Coined by British politician, entomologist and cricketer Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham, in 1900.
