From dermato- (“skin”, from Ancient Greek δέρμᾰ (dérmă)) + Ancient Greek κᾰρπός (kărpós, “fruit; grain; produce; harvest”) + Ancient Greek -ον (-on).
Coined by German botanist Franz Gerhard Eschweiler in 1824.
