First attested as diramme around 1250. Likely a compound of Proto-Germanic *deura (“wild animal, deer”) and either Proto-Germanic *ambe (“current, small river”) or Middle Dutch hamme (“alluvial land, grassland next to water”). Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Fortmond, Giethmen, Helpman, Hertme, Ratum, Reutum, Thamen, Wachtum and Wijthmen.
